Character Name: Carlos (the Scientist)
Series: Welcome to Night Vale
Timeline: Episode 27, First Date
Canon Resource Link: Welcome to Night Vale and Carlos

Character History: Night Vale was a...quaint little desert community way out in the middle of nowhere in some state in the United States. The specific location of the little town of horrors would be unknown. Night Vale was very different from normal towns. Not only was it an authoritarian place with Big Brother (aka the Sheriff's Secret Police) watching everyone and everything that went down in it, but weird things would happen for no apparent reason. For example, a levitating cat in the men's bathroom at the local radio station, or formless blobs with teeth stuck inside every clock, or glow clouds that could take over a person's mind while raining dead animals from its multicolored body.

All of those factors combined were what initially brought Carlos to the desert town. It was a scientific anomaly, a puzzle waiting for someone to solve. When he and his team arrived in Night Vale, he held a town meeting, telling the citizens that they were going to be studying the place, since it was the "most scientifically interesting town in the US." That first day had Carlos and company racing all around getting impossible readings. There was a house that was clearly there, but definitely didn't exist. The clocks were useless. Night Vale Community Radio probably had high levels of radiation (it was unclear what type of instrument Carlos was using at the time), but everyone there was fine. There should have been catastrophic earthquakes happening, but Night Vale never felt so much as a quiver of plate shifting.

Oh, and the radio host, Cecil, had a crush on him.

Quite a few people probably would've run screaming from Night Vale after being there for a few weeks, but not Carlos. He was either too stubborn, curious, or both. There was science to be done, after all! Anyway, Carlos stayed and used his scientific findings to help warn the town of some danger (which was a shot in the dark more often than not), explain why or what was happening, and help ease them out of danger (50-50 chance depending on the type of danger). The problem was that with everything happening seemingly on a whim or at random, it was hard to focus on just one thing or even a spectrum of things.

There was one thing that took up a certain amount of time for him. Time didn't work like it did everywhere else. If anything, it ran a quite a bit slower in Night Vale than in the rest of the world. It was a finding that Carlos called Cecil about, who then reported on it on his radio show. The next time he called, it was about the clocks some weeks later. Instead of having a quartz crystal and gears and whatnot, the clocks in Night Vale had weird, grey blobs with teeth inside them. After leaving a couple of voice mails, he got a visit from the Man in the Tan Jacket, though he couldn't remember the encounter afterward.

Despite the fact that nothing of particular significance was learned and any notes written about the subject of Night Vale would probably look like the slow, downward spiral of a man going insane, Carlos stuck to it. He stuck to it for over a year. On the anniversary of his arriving in Night Vale, something pretty significant in his life happened. There was a city that had been discovered below lane five in the local bowling alley and arcade a year ago. It was only now that they finally "arrived" to wage war against the people on the surface. Carlos, in a moment of bravery, foolishness, stubbornness, a need for something to make sense in this goddamn town, or a combination of all of the above, went down into that tunnel leading into the underground city alone. He came back after some time later, and led the armed militia to its location. Carlos then went down to that city, which was actually very small and about 12 feet down instead of large and 12 miles down. He claimed that this was why it took so long for the small people living in that city to get up here, and that there was nothing to fear from it.

Turned out that was a premature statement to make. Carlos promptly got stabbed and sustained all sorts of injuries, and had been presumed dead. That was until the racist jerk of an Apache Tracker (who was a white guy, but then went into some sort of transformation and was now a Native American stuck speaking Russian) saved his life by getting him out of the hole! Unfortunately, the Apache Tracker was dealt a mortal wound when saving Carlos' life. Nothing could save him, not even "Indian magicks," but the owner of the bowling alley was a certified doctor, and he was able to at least patch up Carlos.

That near-death experience gave him some food for thought on his life. He called for Cecil to meet him out back of the Arby's, musing at how he used to think that all of the strange things that were happening in Night Vale were sinister in some form. They were dangerous, sure, but he found that it was just how the town was. Just because weird shit happened on a daily basis didn't mean that it was broken, per se. It was Carlos' turning point to accepting Night Vale for what it was, though the experience didn't stop him from doing scientific studies on the place.

It was a couple of weeks later that Carlos got the guts to ask Cecil out on an "official" date. The date went pretty well, all things considered, even with this whole malevolent shadow enveloping Night Vale and its citizens. They made smalltalk over dinner, though Carlos had the dorkiest opener ever by saying that he "was thinking a lot. It's what scientists do!" After their dinner, they broke a window to get out and then spent some time studying trees in Mission Grove Park. At Carlos' suggestion. The night ended with a kiss, though, so Carlos probably got quite a few Brownie points for that.

About a little after he fled walked back into his lab, Wonderland decided to have its turn to mess with Night Vale's favorite scientist.

Abilities/Special Powers: Carlos is, for all intents and purposes, a normal human scientist. As far as anyone is aware, he doesn't have any supernatural abilities or special powers.

Third-Person Sample:

Trees. He had to study the trees in Mission Grove Park. Carlos was obviously the best conversationalist outside the lab. Granted, it was better than looking up at the sky and listening to the people around them scream and cry at their feelings of insignificance. Heaven knew he didn't need help with that at the time. Oh God and Cecil was definitely going to talk all about it on his show.

Carlos leaned against the door of his lab, closed his eyes, and sighed. When he opened his eyes again, he quickly forgot about feeling like trash. All of a sudden, the scientist was in a mansion. He blinked, cleaned his glasses, and blinked again. Nope, the new scenery hadn't changed one iota.

Did.

Did Night Vale just send Carlos somewhere else? Was the town sentient enough to feel something like displeasure at how Carlos had acted during the date, and it sent him elsewhere as punishment? Or was he still in Night Vale and this was some sort of optical hallucination he was having?

Well, if it was a hallucination, they usually lasted from a few minutes to approximately 24 hours. The layout of the foyer was definitely different from that of his lab, however, so it was much more likely that he was somewhere else. Some when, maybe, and he probably wouldn't be all that surprised if that were the case.

Regardless, the Scientific Method was about to be used in this situation. Most of the time it was trumped in Night Vale, but if Carlos was operating under the assumption that this was not Night Vale.... Well, the first step was to gather information about the new place he was in. After that, he could start hypothesizing. Goal set, the scientist straightened and walked purposefully through the halls of the mansion, determined to find someone to talk to about all this.

First-Person Sample:

[Carlos is excited. He's so excited it's like he's a five-year-old on Christmas morning and not a thirty-something-year-old man.]

I appropriated one of the empty rooms next to my own to use as a makeshift lab, and these closets...! They're simply amazing! They do have some limitations, of course. I mean, it makes sense that the things you take out shouldn't exceed the dimensions of the doorway. I had to make do with something smaller than your typical black-topped table you see in any old science room in high school, but I guess I could just use the kitchen if I'm in desperate need of more space.

[He moves back a bit to give viewers a look at the refurnished room. There's a lot of technical science-y stuff in the room, but at least it's organized neatly.]

Also, I'm compiling some data into a notebook and making some digital copies onto my laptop on Wonderland. I would very much appreciate more information on the different kinds of "events" that have happened in the past, and maybe some of the more important historical events in its timeline. Naturally, I'm willing to share this information with everyone else here in either a written or digital medium.

Oh, and if anybody knows if there have been any scientific experiments that have been performed in Wonderland, would anyone know where I could find a copy of the reports? Or if they could loan it to me if they have that on-hand already?

My thanks for your cooperation.

[Carlos grins before cutting the connection and busying himself with his new lab. Science.]
